The Magic of Spellbinders

Training sessions to become a Spellbinder are coming up in January at the Philip S. Miller Library (100 S. Wilcox St., Castle Rock): Monday, January 26, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday, January 30, 9 a.m. to noon. Attendance at both sessions is required to become a Spellbinder. Registration is also required. To sign up for these classes, email spellbinders@dclibraries.org, or call 303-791-READ and ask for Priscilla Queen in the Literacy Department.

Gain World Perspective with Great Decisions Discussion Series

Great Decisions BookDouglas County Library adult patrons can act locally and think globally by joining one of four 2009 Great Decisions discussion groups. The Philip S. Miller Library (Castle Rock) and Highlands Ranch Library will each host daytime and evening groups. Each group will meet 9 times, first to establish the coming agenda and then eight times to discuss specific topics. Registration is required and it is inclusive for all eight sessions, no drop-ins and no single sessions.

The Truth Behind the Talk

Truth Behind the TalkThis year’s election will have long-term effects on our economy, our community, and our country.

Be an informed voter – come to Douglas County Libraries Truth Behind the Talk where 9News reporter Adam Schrager will show you how to sort through the jargon of politics to find the truth. Learn about how Schrager’s "Truth Test" holds politicians accountable for what they say.

Participants are encouraged to bring copies of political mailings for the group to discuss. Registration required.

Literacy Volunteer Orientation and Training

For adults in our community who would like to reach out by supporting the adult literacy programs as a volunteer. Volunteers help students learn English, prepare for the GED or citizenship test, or read.

Training will include:

  • Volunteer support
  • Adult learning theory
  • Tutor training

Bonfils Blood Drives @ Your Library

Bonfils Blood DriveDouglas County Libraries has formed a “partnership for life” with Bonfils Blood Center and will be holding blood drives throughout 2008. Bonfils needs 4,200 blood donations weekly to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for unexpected events.
